5 things that you should NEVER give to your Dog

Dogs fill a void in our lives that we never knew it existed. They bring joy and peace at our homes and we want to keep them healthy and safe, which includes being mindful of what they eat. While dogs can eat a variety of foods, some things are not safe for them and can cause serious health problems. Here are five things that dogs should not eat:

  1. Chocolate: Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, seizures, and even death. If you suspect that your dog has ingested chocolate, seek veterinary care immediately.

  2. Grapes and raisins: Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, and even small amounts can be dangerous. Symptoms of grape or raisin poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and decreased appetite. If you suspect that your dog has ingested grapes or raisins, contact your veterinarian right away.

  3. Onions and garlic: Onions and garlic contain compounds that can damage a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia. Symptoms of onion or garlic poisoning in dogs include weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and pale gums. While small amounts of onion or garlic are not likely to cause harm, larger amounts can be toxic. It's best to avoid feeding your dog anything that contains onions or garlic, including table scraps and certain seasonings.

  4. Avocado: While avocados are a healthy food for humans, they can be toxic to dogs. Avocados contain a substance called persin, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing in dogs. The pit and skin of an avocado can also pose a choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage. It's best to keep avocados away from your dog.

  5. Alcohol: Even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous for dogs. Alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, coma or death. Keep alcoholic beverages and other products that contain alcohol away from your dog, and be sure to clean up spills promptly.

Avoid feeding your dog chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, avocado, and alcohol. If you suspect that your dog has ingested something toxic, contact your veterinarian right away. By being vigilant about what your dog eats, you can help ensure a long and healthy life for your furry friend.
